Classificatio Processes

Data

In designing and operating a mining/mineral processing operation, there are some basic equipment and processes that are important.

Of these sizing and classification is high on the list.  This is because most concentrating operations work best on specific size ranges.

Figure 1 – Range of Applications

   General Cyclone Sizing

Classifying cyclones separate predominately based on the differential size of the particles, with the finer sized going to overflow and the coarser particles going to underflow.  Water-only or Hydro-cyclones separate based on differential specific gravity, with the lighter particles going to overflow.  Dense (heavy) medium cyclones accentuate the gravity separation by using a separating media of known and controlled specific gravity.

    Vibrating Screens

Vibrating screens are primarily classification devices, used for separating a feed stream into two or more products of different size ranges.  They are also used for dewatering products from cleaning processes, and for media recover following dense medium separation.  If they are used to remove excess of water and fines from a feed stream prior to cleaning they are often referred to as desliming screens.  The general nomenclature and definition of screens whether they are used for classification or dewatering is essentially the same.

        Sieve Bends

Sieve bends are classification devices commonly used ahead of vibrating screens for initial size separation and in dewatering stages to remove the bulk of the water and very fine size particles from the vibrating screen to reduce its load.  They can be used by themselves in one or two-stage units after cyclones or by themselves, and before flotation, again, as a dewatering and classification step.  The sieve bend is a curved, stationary sieve developed by the Dutch State Mines organization.  To improve screening efficiency, especially on very fine coals, use of vibrating sieve bends has been done successfully at several operations.
